Even from buying a cauliflower.
In the book’s closing chapter, Ridley considers what an ordinary trip to the grocer might teach us.
The summons here surely is to be boundlessly curious. To advance meanings, we must reach across disciplines in the pursuit of associations and contrasts, taking those muddy lanes leading away from our own small paddocks.
It seems to me that one of the tricks in the exploration of meaning is to never come back the same person, from anything. Even from buying a cauliflower. In an earlier draft, I had dropped this image as being too intense, not to mention disturbing for your grocer. But having recently reminded myself over a salad of the exquisite pattern of florets in a raw cauliflower head, I stick with my original inclination: I do indeed mean even from buying a cauliflower! Professor D’Arcy Thompson would have been delighted!
